about us

“One Saturday morning in June, 2020 I was bored and decided I’d go out and buy as many wrecked bikes as I could for $100, strip them to the frames, and rebuild them - just to hone my bike mechanic skills. This COVID-era hobby quickly became an obsession (hence the name) and is today a registered business, MyBikeHabit LLC."

The Habit

Jim (who is known by many as JC) has been a cycling enthusiast since forever ago. In the most recent decade, one is likely to encounter Jim on two wheels on the mountain bike trails, on the less crowded weekend morning roads around South Charlotte, or among the NC/SC triathlon circuit. “My bikes get used a lot and so they require and deserve frequent service to operate smoothly and reliably,” says Jim.  While he has long done basic service to his own bikes, it wasn’t until the COVID era and the long wait times at the local bike shops that he got far more deeply into bike maintenance and repair.

All along this has been a side project for Jim, who has a career as a writer and content manager for a big company. Jim coined the company name, MyBikeHabit. This is a nod to the addictive nature of cycling and obsessions of those for whom it is an important part of living. This is Jim's third entrepreneurial venture in the past 20 years. He and wife, Ruth, owned an office furniture dealership (Techline-Charlotte) for eight years and for six years following that they operated a successful construction business.

“Especially considering all the new cyclists around Charlotte and continued long wait times for service at bike shops, we feel that there is an excellent opportunity for a well-run service operation with low overhead and quick turnaround. Our business model is built around customer convenience. We're not modeling around the bike enthusiast who has to have the best of the best and willing to pay out the nose. Our intended customer is the south Charlotte mom or dad managing a garage full of bikes on a budget and without a lot of discretionary time. We came up with the concept of valet bike pickup and delivery for customers in just a few ZIPs and it’s become a real hit. By and large, our customers don’t choose to spend their time making trips to a bike shop at inconvenient, limited hours. We come to them!”

MyBikeHabit is run out of Jim and Ruth's Montibello home for now. They keep the shop well equipped and stocked for a wide range of repairs and service.
